Top out-of-town exhibits

In order to get a glimpse at this season’s most anticipated museum exhibitions, you may have to head out of Kingston. Here are three out-of-town exhibits – in New York City, Toronto and Ottawa – to keep your eyes open for this summer.

Peace – The Exhibition

The Canadian War Museum, Ottawa

When: May 31, 2013 – Jan. 5, 2014

Admission: $13 for regular admission/ $10 for students

Driving distance from Kingston: 2 hours

Our nation’s capital boasts some of the best history exhibitions, and Peace: The Exhibition at the Canadian War Museum is no exception. I can’t help but recall the very surreal feeling I had back in first-year when our philosophy professor at the Castle in England took us to The War Museum in London and I looked on at piles of children’s shoes, drawings and diaries from the Holocaust. These remnants of a long begotten period fascinate me to no end, and I’m glad that The Canadian War Museum is hosting an exhibition that focuses on the dynamic interventions and negotiations in our country’s long history of peacekeeping.

Christian Louboutin

The Design Exchange, Toronto

When: June 21 – Sept. 15

Admission price: $22 for regular admission/ $18 for students and seniors

Driving distance from Kingston: 2.5 hours

Idolizing fashion designers from your computer screen is entirely different from viewing their collections in-person. After my year abroad, I can attest to the fact that nothing beats seeing something up close and personal. Having a first-year history lecture about WWI doesn’t compare to visiting and walking in those very trenches in Ypres, Belgium. The same experience of fashion and art can’t be had for fashion fiends without viewing Christian Louboutin’s shoes in all their glory. What I admire the most about Louboutin is that he’s wildly adventurous with his design, sticking with his intuition over following trends. The fact that this exhibit has been curated by The Design Museum London can only mean that you’re in for a spectacle of high fashion. For a fashion-minded student who can only dream of owning a $1000+ pair of Louboutins, this exhibit may be as close as some of us come to having these lavish pieces of work.

PUNK: Chaos to Couture

The Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York

When: May 9 – August 14

Admission price: $25 for regular admission/ $12 for student admission

Driving distance from Kingston: 6.5 hours

You may be asking yourself what punk has to do with high fashion. This exhibit will shift your thought of punk as an anti-establishment statement. Arranged by theme, the seven galleries will show the influence punk has had on couture fashion from the iconic era of the 70s. Punk will no longer be associated with those bygone high school phases of wearing black clothing and spikes, but this exhibit’s four DIY galleries will have you understanding that punk translates into deconstructionism, social realism and provocation with taste. You’ll be in for a multimedia experience with vintage videos and juxtaposed contemporary punk-style outfits by high fashion designers. PUNK: Chaos to Couture also brings name topping, tell-tale designers together for a must-see exhibit: Burberry, Calvin Klein, Chanel, Dolce & Gabbana, Givenchy, and Vivienne Westwood to name a few.
